I often hear people talking about A Court Of Frost And Starlight as a useless part of the ACOTAR storyline. And everyone is of course entitled to their own opinion, but I want to express my opinion of why I don’t agree with that statement.

The original trilogy of ACOTAR is a high fantasy full of action. ACOFAS isn’t. ACOFAS is about dealing with the aftermath of war, of dealing with trauma and loss and rebuilding your life. It hasn’t got any action, but instead gives us a deeper look in the thoughts and morals of the main characters, but also the ones that haven’t gotten that much screenplay. If you only like excitement and action, then no, this isn’t a book for you.
Something I love about this book is that we get to know way more about the thoughts and history of Cassian. He often only got portrayed as a funny brute, and here we read more about his mother and why it’s important for him that more female Illyrians train. I loved that look into his head that shows us that he is so much more than just a cute brute.
Even though Nesta annoys the living crap out of me, I really did like her parts in this book. She is someone who really can’t deal with her losses and lost the ability to feel. I think Sarah wrote her chapters really well, we really feel her desperation and the void she is feeling inside herself.
But the best part about this book was definitely Feyre and her dealing with her trauma. Many people who underwent a serious trauma need to find a way to deal with it. And I really loved how throughout the book you see the steps she takes to deal with it by painting and in the end, help children to deal with it by being creative. I think this is such a good message from Sarah, to show survivors of any kind of trauma that being creative and trying to find a way to cope in any kind of way can be so important in a healing process.
Yes, for me the sex scene was a bit useless and not fitting with the rest of the story, but well, it’s Sarah, and where Sarah goes, smutty scenes follow 😉
For anyone who was looking forward to more action and excitement, this might not be your book. But for the people who realistically want to see how it is for people after a traumatic experience, this book might seriously be of value to you. And well, if you just like sex scenes, there’s also a way too, over the top, scene, so enjoy!
Vaak hoor ik mensen zeggen dat ze Hof van IJs en Sterren een nutteloze toevoeging vinden aan de Hof van Doorns en Rozen storyline. Nou heeft iedereen het recht op zijn eigen mening, maar wil met dit blogje uitleggen waarom ik dit zelf niet vind.

De originele trilogie van Hof van Doorns en Rozen is een high fantasy, gevuld met actie. Dat is dit boek dus niet. Hof van IJs en Sterren is een boek over hoe je dealt met de nasleep van oorlog en het dealen met trauma en verlies, en het herbouwen van je leven na dit alles. Het heeft geen actie, maar geeft de lezer juist een dieper zicht op de gedachtegangen en moralen van zowel de hoofdkarakters als de, op dit moment, bijrollen. Maar als de actie hetgeen was wat je het meest boeide, dan is dit boek inderdaad niks voor jou.
Iets wat ik bijvoorbeeld zelf heel mooi vond was aan dit boek, was dat we veel meer leerden over Cassian. Over zijn geschiedenis en zijn moeder en waarom het toch zo belangrijk voor hem is dat de vrouwen ook getraind worden, en niet alleen de mannen. Vaak werd hij geportretteerd als een grappige bruut, maar nu krijgen we meer een inzicht in wie hij daadwerkelijk is.
Zelfs al haat ik Nesta met het vuur van een duizend zonnen, ik vond haar hoofdstukken in het boek ontzettend interessant. Ze is iemand die echt niet kan dealen met haar verdriet en heeft haar gevoelens afgestompt. Ik vind dat Sarah haar hoofdstukken heel goed en gedetailleerd heeft beschreven. Je begint steeds meer te begrijpen waarom ze is hoe ze is.
Maar het beste gedeelte van dit boek vond ik Feyre’s hoofdstukken. In deze hoofdstukken ontdek je stapje voor stapje hoe Feyre steeds meer haar trauma’s een plekje geeft door deze te schilderen, en om uiteindelijk dit ook te gebruiken om kinderen met trauma’s te helpen. Ik denk dat Sarah de lezer hiermee ook een wijze les wil geven van, probeer je trauma’s een plaats te geven, door trauma’s van je af te schrijven/tekenen/schilderen en deze een fysiek plekje te geven. De stappen die Feyre doorgaat in dit boek om dit te doen, kunnen ook echt een steun zijn degenen die dit nodig hebben.
Ja, de veel te overdreven seksscène was niet echt passend bij de rest van het boek, maar ik denk dat we maar moeten accepteren dat wat Sarah ook schrijft, smut er maar gewoon bij hoort ;).
Voor iedereen die uitkeek naar meer actie, is Hof van IJs en Sterren zeker geen aanrader. Maar voor iedereen die wil zien hoe onze favoriete personages op realistische wijze dealen met de nasleep van traumatische ervaringen, kan dit boek van serieuze waarde zijn. En mocht je nou gewoon zin hebben in een flink over de top seksscène, dan veel plezier!
Throne Of Glass is mijn favoriete boekenserie ooit. Ik ontdekte de serie toen deel 3 net uit was in het Engels en ik was meteen verliefd. De wereld, de personages, de geweldige verhaallijn, ik hield ervan. En dat doe ik nog steeds. Jaar na jaar genoot ik ontzettend van elk boek dat weer uitkwam. Tot 23 oktober 2018, toen het laatste deel uitkwam in het Engels. Wat heb ik me een potje gejankt, zeg. We zijn nu precies een jaar verder en er helemaal overheen ben ik nog niet. Zelfs al komt The World of Throne Of Glass er nog aan, het verhaal is toch echt wel voorbij. Dit blogje is voor iedereen die er net als ik nog moeite mee heeft, of juist net klaar is met de serie en emotionele steun nodig heeft. Hier wat tips:
Herlees. Opnieuw en opnieuw. Ik heb op dit moment de hele serie rond de 4 keer herlezen, maar Queen Of Shadows waarschijnlijk al rond de 10 keer. Don’t judge. Het hoofdstuk met de reünie-scène is nog steeds mijn go-to scene als ik even wat liefde nodig heb. Daarnaast, voor degenen die alleen de standaard boeken heeft gelezen en helaas niet de speciale edities heeft kunnen fixen, er is een heel lief persoon op Tumblr die een exclusieve scene uit Heir Of Fire heeft uitgetypt voor de liefhebbers. Als je altijd al hebt willen weten waarom Aelin The Fire-breathing Bitch Queen wordt genoemd, lees deze scene dan snel!
Merchandise. Merchandise is iets wat je kunt vasthouden terwijl je tranen met tuiten jankt. Of het nu prints of bookmarks of andere merchandise is, het is ideaal. Mijn ultimate favorite? Funko’s. Ik heb helaas nog maar één TOG funko, maar ik hoop er later zeker meer in mijn handen te krijgen. Dan kan ik al mijn geliefde personages vasthouden terwijl ik huil. Wat ik dan ook zeker ga doen.
Lees andere boeken in dezelfde stijl. Ik weet het, op dit moment denk je dat je nooit meer een ander boek kunt lezen, omdat niks kan vergelijken met TOG, maar dat wordt gelukkig beter. We hebben gelukkig nog steeds de ACOTAR boeken, waar nog een nieuw boek van uit gaat komen. Daarnaast zijn er meer boeken die ik je zeker kan aanraden. Éen daarvan is zonder twijfel To Kill A Kingdom van Alexandra Christo. Krachtige vrouwelijke personages? Check. Goede fantasy verhaallijn? Check. Een hardhoofdige mannelijke personage? Zeer zeker check! de Touching Juliette serie is ook een aanrader. Juliette is dan niet even badass als Aelin in mijn mening (maar even serieus, wie is dat überhaupt wel?), maar ze is nog steeds heel tof, het verhaal is ontzettend goed en de mannen zijn ook zéker niet verkeerd! ‘Looking at you, Kenji *wink*. En een nog relatief nieuw boek, maar ontzettend goed, en ook zeker passend in de genoemde kaders is A Curse So Dark And Lonely. Zeker een aanrader als je van Belle en het Beest houdt in een interessantere omgeving.
En, last, but not least, probeer het te accepteren. Ja het is moeilijk. En ja, ik huil nog steeds tranen met tuiten en eet liters aan Ben & Jerry ijs elke keer dat ik Kingdom Of Ash lees. Maar wat was het een geweldige afsluiter van een fantastische serie. Nee, hij was niet perfect, en ja, ik had graag bepaalde dingen anders gezien, maar ik ben nog steeds ontzettend tevreden met het einde wat we gekregen hebben. Zelfs al ben ik nog steeds niet over een aantal doden heen. TOG fans, jullie weten wat ik bedoel… *pakt tissues en Ben & Jerry.*
Throne of Glass is probably one of the series I have the biggest connection to, next to Alice In Wonderland. I discovered the series when the third book came out and I immediately fell in love. The world, the characters, the storyline, I loved it, and I still do. For years I enjoyed seeing the next book come out, and the next, and the next. But since 23 October 2018 the series is officially over. Yes, the World of Throne Of Glass is still coming, but the storyline is done. So this is a blog for everyone who finishes this perfect series one day and thinks WHAT NOW?!? Here some tips:
Reread. Again and again. I think I’ve reread the whole series around the four times now, with QoS as a highlight, which I have probably read around the 10 times now. No joke. That reunion scene is my go to place whenever I need some love. But a reread is always effective. And also, there’s a scene from Heir Of Fire that isn’t in the standard books, definitely read that one! It’s absolutely amazing and answers questions I know you all have about the origin of the Fire-Breathing Bitch Queen name. You can read this here.
Merchandise. Merchandise is something you can hold while you cry. Like prints, bookmarks, and my personal favorite: Funko’s. I sadly only have one TOG funko, but hopefully I get more one day. Then I can literally hold on to something 3D while crying. Which I will. Often.
Read other books in the same style. I know, you feel like nothing can ever compare to TOG, I totally get it. But we still have the ACOTAR series, which isn’t officially finished. There are also other books that I can definitely recommend. To Kill A Kingdom from Alexandra Christo is one of those. Fierce female characters? Check. Good fantasy storyline? Check. Hardheaded men? Check! The Shatter Me is also a recommendation. Juliette isn’t as awesome as Aelin in my opinion (but really, who even is?), but the storyline is amazing and definitely has some veeeeery interesting men ;). And one that’s still very new, but also has all the points above, is A Curse So Dark And Lonely. Check it out if you love Beauty And The Beast in a way awesomer world.
And last, but not least, try to accept. Yes, it’s hard. Yes, I also still cry and eat ice-cream after Kingdom Of Ash. But what was it a good ending of an amazing series. Yes, it wasn’t perfect, but what even is? I couldn’t have asked for a better ending. Even though I’m still not over the deaths. Fans, you all know what I mean… *grabs tissue and ice-cream*
